Ranchi/New Delhi: A preliminary report submitted by the Jharkhand State Forensic Science Laboratory to the state director general of police and additional director general (crime investigation) has concluded that Delhibased journalist Nirupama Pathak was murdered.
Sources in the state police said the forensic report points out that the fan which the family claimed Nirupama used to hang herself was found to be in perfect shape. If the 23-year-old had hanged herself from the fan, it would have caused some damage to the blades and other parts.
WHO KILLED HER?
Murder a possibility but more evidence is needed: Top cop
Ranchi/New Delhi: The forensic report into the death of Nirupama Pathak says that in case of suicide the ligature marks around the neck should have been vertical, but were horizontal in her case. The claims of the family members that she ended her life by hanging from the ceiling fan cannot be believed, said a police officer quoting the forensic report.
DGP (Jharkhand) Neyaz Ahmed told TOI he had received the forensic report and another report from the SP (Koderma). ‘‘We have negated some theories though other options are open. Murder is a serious possibility but we will arrive at a conclusion after we get more evidence,’’ he said.
Nirupama died under mysterious circumstances at her family home in Koderma district of Jharkhand on April 29. She was in love with a Delhi-based journalist but her family had opposed the match as the boy was from a ‘lower’ caste. While her family members claimed that the threemonth pregnant journalist committed suicide the postmortem report prepared by doctors at a local hospital stated that she was murdered. However, experts at AIIMS Delhi raised doubts over the postmortem report, saying it had many flaws.
The forensic report, however, does not mention other evidence collected by the police from Delhi and Koderma which were also forwarded to the laboratory for examination.
Meanwhile, Sudha Pathak, mother of Nirupama who was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days on May 3 was produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Koderma, after her 14-day police custody period expired. Judge N K Agarwal rejected Sudha’s bail petition and remanded her to judicial custody till May 21.
Meanwhile, Sudha’s counsel Arun Mishra said he had met the Jharkhand police chief to seek a ‘‘fair probe’’ into the case. ‘‘I met Neyaz Ahmad and requested him for a fair investigation. At the moment, the probe seems to be indicting Nirupama’s family members for her death,’’ Mishra told TOI on phone.
‘‘There are ambiguities in the postmortem report. One of the doctors who conducted the postmortem says that he is a novice and had never conducted an autopsy before,’’ he added.
The lawyer alleged that Nirupama’s boyfriend was taking advantage of being a journalist and was influencing the probe.
‘‘We want a fair probe. If the probe finds anyone guilty, then that person should be punished. The investigation should not be done with prejudices,’’ Mishra said.
